Wild Strawberries

Smultron in Swedish, Fragaria vesca Lat. have got the name Fragaria in Latin from the word fragrans which means fragrant, scentic.
The herb is a perrennial plant up to 8 inches high. It is blooming from May and all summer. The berries are ripe in July - August. The plant is common in all Sweden except in the mountains.
You can find the plant in dry areas, e.g. hills, roadsides, clearances in the forest all over Scandinavia.

Among children it is popular to pick strawberries and put them on a straw of grass.

A kindred plant is strawberry Fragaria ananassa. That berry really is connected to Swedish summer. But there are people who are reacting allergic to these berries.
In our family we have Strawberry Cake at each celebration day during the season.
